The China Folk Culture Village is a theme park in Shenzhen, China. It is located adjacent to the Splendid China theme park and features displays of the daily life and architecture of China's . It was opened to the public in October 1991.

Window of the World

The Window of the World is a theme park located in the western part of the city of Shenzhen in the People's Republic of China. It has about 130 reproductions of some of the most famous tourist attractions in the world squeezed into 48 hectares. The 108 meter tall Eiffel Tower dominates the skyline and the sight of the Pyramids and the Taj Mahal all in proximity to each other are all part of the appeal of this theme park.

There are also a wide selection of international restaurants and mini exhibitions on famous figures from world history. Window of the World allows you to eat Mexican food, see the Niagara Falls then wander around Angkor Wat. The site takes at least half a day to explore and every day ends with a firework and laser show.

Admission is 120 . Persons between 65 and 69 are half price, while seniors 70 and over are admitted free . Children whose height is between 1.1 and 1.4 meters are also half price, with children under 1.1 meters free.

Skiing and snow tubing are available at the "Alps Indoor Skiing".

In the evening, one can enjoy "Fervorous Paris Nights" at "Caesar's Palace". Spectacles include young bikini-clad women prancing on stage to the music of Tom Jones' "Sex Bomb".

Transportation

Since late 2004, when the Shenzhen Metro was opened, tourists have been able to reach the Window of the World conveniently via subway, using Line 1.

TurboJET is the brand name for the operations of the Hong Kong-based Shun Tak-China Travel Ship Management Limited , which was established from the joint venture between Shun Tak Holdings Limited and in July 1999. It operates hydrofoil ferry services in southern China.

Routes

TurboJET provides services between Hong Kong, Macau and Shenzhen, all located around the Pearl River Delta in southern China. The route between Hong Kong and Macau is the busiest and is operating 24 hours a day. It takes approximately one hour to travel the 60-km journey on TurboJET's high speed vessels.

Splendid China is a comprehensive miniature park reflecting the history, culture, art, ancient architecture, and customs and habits of various nationalities in China. It is one of the world's largest scenery parks in the amount of scenarios reproduced. The park is developed and managed by the major travel and tourist corporation, China Travel Services.

Location and traveling there

Splendid China is situated by the Shenzhen Bay in a tourist area of Oversea Chinese Town in Shenzhen, Special Economic Zone of China. It is a 35-40 minute train ride from Lo Wu metro station , or 30 minutes by bus .

About the park

Over 100 major tourist attractions have been miniaturized and laid out according to the map of China. Most attractions have been reduced on a scale of 1:15. It is divided into Scenic Spot Area and Comprehensive Service Area. The entire park covers 30 hectares.

There are cars and trains to transport visitors around the park, making it possible to visit the Great Wall of China, Forbidden City, Temple of heaven, Three Gorges Dam, Potala Palace and the Terracotta Army in one day.

The park also hosts several shows depicting various events in Chinese History , Chinese Cultural Show, etc. Some of the shows are only performed on weekends.

Other information

A was also built in Orlando, Florida in 1993. It featured similar models of The Great Wall of China, Terra Cotta Warriors, The Forbidden City and Potala Palace. The park closed in 2003.

Soviet aircraft carrier Minsk

''Minsk'' is an aircraft carrier that served the Soviet Navy, and later the Russian Navy, from 1978 to 1994. She was the second -class vessel to be built.

History

''Minsk'' was laid down in 1972, launched on 30 September 1975, completed on 27 September 1978, and decommissioned on 30 June 1993.

Minsk operated in the Pacific Fleet. She had to be retired as a result of a major accident which could only be repaired at Chernomorksi's facility, located in the newly-independent Ukraine. In 1995 she was sold to a South Korean businessman, and later resold to ''Shenzhen Minsk Aircraft Carrier Industry Co. Ltd.'', a company. Until 2006, when the company went bankrupt, ''Minsk'' was part of a military theme park in Shatoujiao district, Shenzhen called Minsk World. The aircraft carrier was put up for auction on 22 March 2006. No bids at the starting price of 128 million were received, so the carrier was withdrawn from sale. On 31 May 2006, the Soviet aircraft carrier was finally auctioned off in Shenzhen for 128 million RMB to CITIC Shenzhen, the current operator.

Shenzhen Xiangxue Eisiti , previously named Shenzhen Kingway and Shenzhen Jianlibao, is a Chinese Super League club, playing at the Shenzhen Stadium in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. They are owned by Beijing Huizhong Tianheng Investment Company, which bought out Jianlibao Group in November 2004. Their Head Coach is Wang Baoshan.

They caused an upset by winning the first ever Chinese Super League season despite financial problems. Their coach Zhu Guanghu was subsequently awarded the coach of the year award and was appointed head coach of the national team.

Since Zhu's departure for the national team, however, the team has fallen from grace and only managed a twelfth placing in the second season. The new coach was Chi Shangbin, who led the team into the ACL, but resigned due to player power, especially from then-captain Li Weifeng and senior player Yang Chen. Chi was unhappy due to the senior players' influence over the team and excessive gambling and tried to regain control of the squad, but Li Weifeng punched out Chi's office window and Yang Chen repeatedly told Chi of the uselessness of his efforts. Despite the chaos, Shenzhen famously reached the semifinals after defeating Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli after losing the first leg in Jeddah. They were heavily defeated by UAE champions Al Ain FC in the semifinals.

Shenzhen TransCard is a contactless smartcard system used in Shenzhen Metro in Shenzhen, People's Republic of China. It is developed by Shenzhen Modern Computer, the provider of automatic fare collection systems to Shenzhen Metro, with cooperation from Octopus Cards Limited, the operator of Hong Kong's Octopus cards system. Shekou is an area at the tip of Nantou Peninsula in Shenzhen, Guangdong, southern China, south of and facing Lau Fau Shan of Hong Kong across .

It was formerly a customs station in Bao'an County and now belongs to of Shenzhen. On 31 January 1979, it became Shekou Industrial Zone developed solely by China Merchants of Hong Kong, earlier than the formation of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone.

Since the 1980's, after foreign oil majors such as Agip, , Texaco, Statoil and obtained concessions for oil exploration in the South China Sea, Shekou started serving as a base for a small contingent of foreign oil platform workers, since qualified personnel were not available locally. As a result of this first mover advantage in catering for mainly western tastes in housing, food and drink, entertainment and schooling, at a time when no alternatives were available in the area, Shekou gradually became home to the majority of the expatriate population working in and around Shenzhen and part of its hinterland in the Pearl River Delta. This trend has however abated after 2003, as the country's continued economic reform, development of the Nanshan and Futian areas, and substantial increases in English levels of university graduates have made life in the city proper more acceptable to many foreigners without school-age children.

In 2003, the local government, seeking to capitalize on the foreign flavor of the town, invested in a complete make-over of Sea World, turning it into a western-style entertainment area centered around the grounded Minghua ship, a 14,000 ton, 168 m long vessel built in 1962 as French president Charles De Gaulle's private yacht, and purchased by China in 1973.

An extension to line 2 of connecting the locality to downtown Shenzhen is under construction and is scheduled for completion in 2009.

Sham Chun River serves as the natural between Hong Kong and mainland China, together with the Sha Tau Kok River.

It formed part of the limit of the of the New Territories in 1898 in the Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory .

Nantou is an area at the back of Nantau Peninsula in Guangdong, China.

It was formerly a walled city facing Tai Shan Bay for coastal defense in Bao'an County and now is the capital city of the in Shenzhen. Mission Hills Golf Club was established in 1992 and 1993 saw the opening of its public driving range. Luohu Commercial City is an enclosed shopping mall located on the Shenzhen side of the Shenzhen River, right outside the entrance/exit to Luohu Immigration Control Point.

Shopping

The mall is six stories tall and sells a wide range of items, including watches, handbags, clothes, shoes, audio-visual products, souvenirs, curtains, DVDs, etc. The mall also includes a number of restaurants and shops that offer services, such as massages and dental work, at very low prices.

Luohu Commercial City is notorious in Hong Kong for its bargains, and many "one-day" visitors from Hong Kong venture no further into Shenzhen than the mall. Most of the items for sale in the mall, however, are either counterfeit or cheap Chinese replicas of designer brands, and the mall has a reputation for selling low-quality goods through high-pressure bargain tactics. Though the mall is a popular stop for tourists from Hong Kong, the majority of Shenzhen residents prefer to avoid it and shop elsewhere, such as Dongmen or Huaqiangbei Lu.

Crime

The popularity of Luohu Commercial City among tourists has also made it a center for illegal activities. The areas around the mall are known for being hotbeds for prostitution, drugs, and pickpocketing. Begging and homelessness are also pervasive, particularly around the bus and train stations.

Within the mall, are common. Data storage devices, such as USB flash drives, are often counterfeit with little or no storage capacity at all. Vendors selling DVDs will sometimes lock the door on customers and initiate high-pressure sales tactics while customers have no route of escape. Also, some shop owners have been known to strike great deals with customers and take their money, only to suddenly change their mind and give counterfeit money back before rendering the agreed upon goods/services. The most infamous of scams is the "teeth cleaning" scam. Customers seeking cheap teeth cleanings will have their teeth cleaned in a painful manner by muscular men in white coats. When the customer complains, they are given a choice: either continue with the treatment till the end or "upgrade" to a more expensive teeth cleaning service. Cases of customers refusing to upgrade are uncommon.

Transportation

Inter-city

The Luohu Inter-city Bus Terminal is located directly under Luohu Commercial Center, and buses to locations in Guangdong and Fujian provinces are available here. A shuttle to Shenzhen Airport is also available in the Bus Terminal. Shenzhen Railway Station is next to the mall and provides long-distance travel across China. Visitors with permission to enter Hong Kong may cross the border at the Immigration Control Point and take the as far as Tsim Sha Tsui.

Within Shenzhen

Located on the north side of Luohu Commercial Center is a bus station for intra-city buses and mini-buses. Immediately to the west is the Luohu Station of the Shenzhen Metro. Taxis are also available at a special taxi stand location below the intra-city bus station.

Border area

Connecting with Lok Ma Chau in Hong Kong, Huanggang is one of three vehicle border crossings between mainland China and Hong Kong.

Transportation

Besides roads connecting with Hong Kong, Shenzhen Metro's station will be completed in 2007. The station will connect with the Lok Mau Chau station via a footbridge, complete with immigration facilities on either side.

Hua Qiang Bei

Hua Qiang Bei is an area in Shenzhen. It runs from Shennan Boulevard at SEG Plaza near Hua Qiang Station on the Shenzhen Metro for one kilometer north to the Pavilion Hotel. It is the spine of a concentrated shopping and restaurant area, with cross streets Zhen Zhong Lu, Zhen Hua Lu and Zhen Xing Lu. Hua Fa Lu is immediately parallel to the east with Yan Nan Lu further away.

The area is characterized by tree-lined streets with wide footpaths. Hua Qiang Bei itself is lined by large buildings each specializing in commercial electronics, consumer electronics or women's clothing. The latter range from top Hong Kong and international designer label shops to locally produced good quality clothing, shoes and bags. Fake goods are largely absent from this area, unlike the other major shopping areas of Dongmen and Luohu Commercial City.

The surrounding streets are lined by clothing shops, hotels, restaurants from all provinces of China with prices ranging from 10RMB to 100RMB per person, western fast food outlets, massage parlours , discotheques, various small stores and several international supermarkets.

On weekends it is difficult to believe that the population of Shenzhen is less than 10 million.

Happy Valley, Shenzhen

Happy Valley is a tourist spot in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China.

It consists of several sightseeing areas like Cartoon City, Mount Advantage, Gold Mine Town, Shangri-la Woods, Sunshine Beach, Typhoon Bay, Happy Times, Playa Maya Water Park and Spanish Square. Attractions include the Space Port, Gold Mine Train, Suspended Looping Coaster and Shoot the Cute. Inside are several restaurants, including the Chinese versions of American standards KFC and TCBY. An attraction in the Shangri-la Woods part of the park, "Safely Back from Haunted House," is a copy of the Disney theme park attraction Alien Encounter.

Dongmen

Dongmen is a major shopping area within the Luohu district of Shenzhen.

Name

One of the oldest parts of Shenzhen, the Dongmen area was established about 300 years ago, leading it to be alternatively known as "Laojie" .

Location

Dongmen is accessible from exits to the Laojie and lies just north of Shennan Dong Road. "Dongmen" usually refers to more than just "Dongmen Road", encompasing the entire series of connecting commercial streets. These streets were closed off to automobile traffic in 1999.

Shopping

The variety of shopping in Dongmen is wider than Luo Hu Commercial City, but has a similar focus on Chinese-made and counterfeit goods. Beauty parlor services are very popular in Dongmen and the department store Maoye has locations on both ends of the road. Despite being limited to pedestrian traffic, Dongmen can become very crowded on nights, weekends, and holidays, giving it a similar feel to in Shanghai.

Deep Bay, Hong Kong

Deep Bay is a bay off the northwest coast of Lau Fau Shan, Yuen Long, Hong Kong. It is surrounded to the north by Shenzhen proper and west by the peninsula of , China. It is also known as Shenzhen Bay . But the most common name is usually Deep Bay.

Name

The local Cantonese name of the bay is Hau Hoi Wan , which mean the ''back bay''. It is opposite to another bay, Tsin Hoi Wan , which means ''front bay'', on the other side of Nantau Peninsula. The Chinese character 后 in 后海灣 is the homonym of 後 , and also its simplified character. Some attribute the character 后 to the goddess of mercy and sea, Tin Hau .

The name of Shenzhen Bay came much later, at least after the establishment of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone in 1980. The name is becoming more and more notable after a hotel was named Shenzhen Bay. While the government of Shenzhen uses the name widely, the people and government in Hong Kong continue use the local name .

Ecology

As the bay is largely enclosed by lands, fresh water from the surroundings are injected to the bay, formed by a large sheer with a shallow shore of wetlands. The margin of fresh water and forms a valuable habitat for a wide variety of life.

The bay's northern shore used to be lined with marshes. As Shenzhen began to develop into a major urban centre, the northern shoreline was to provide land for buildings. Some departments had tried to preserve the endangered environment but mistakenly introduced foreign species of mangrove, which threatened their indigenous counterparts.

The marshes remain largely intact along the southern part of the bay, which is under Hong Kong's jurisdiction. Mai Po is an important for in the area. Pools of former fishing farming is another attraction to birds.

Agriculture and fisheries

The ecology of the bay made the bay rich in fish and oysters. Lau Fau Shan is particularly famous for oysters in Hong Kong. From Lau Fau Shan to Mai Po, the villagers made use of the special environment forms pools to cultivate fishes. A by-product of the cultivation, greasyback shrimp , is also a delicacy in Hong Kong.

Illegal immigrants

Before 1949, Chinese people were free to travel between Hong Kong and mainland China. In order to halt large influx of refugees from mainland China, the Hong Kong Government established border control and compulsory registration of Hong Kong residents was carried out.

As a result, it was harder to migrate to Hong Kong than before and thus many crossed the border illegally. Deep Bay became the main access for illegal immigrants because border controls were harder to enforce at sea. It was relatively easy to cross the bay and there were major roads to the urban centres of Hong Kong. The rural town of Lau Fau Shan was the major landing point.
